FICTION
Shadow of Night, by Deborah Harkness.
This exciting sequel to A Discovery of Witches
begins with Diana Bishop and her vampire
husband, Matthew Clairmont, stepping back
in time to Elizabethan London in search of
answers surrounding the mystery of Ashmole
782. Diana is a witch who must find a teacher
to help her learn to use her magic, while she
and Matthew look for clues about a lost manuscript they believe holds the key to their
existence. With the help of some of Matthew’s
old friends, including Christopher Marlowe
and Walter Raleigh, they embark on a thrilling journey through the past that you won’t
want to miss.

Outside the Lines, by Amy Hatvany. Leo
Tolstoy said it best: “Happy families are all
alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its
own way.” I’ve always found stories about
unhappy families endlessly fascinating. This
well-crafted novel tells the story of Eden, who
at the age of 10 finds her father after his
botched suicide attempt. Her parents divorce,
and her father disappears. Twenty years later,
Eden sets out to track him down in hopes of
finally forgiving him. Her search uncovers
more than she thought she’d find.
Private Games, by James Patterson. If you
are an avid reader of Patterson’s novels, you
may have already enjoyed Private Games
when it was released as a hardcover. This
month, the nonstop thriller comes out in
paperback, making it a handy companion for
summer travels. This pulse-pounding adven-
ture is set during the upcoming 2012 London
Olympics, for which the Private detective
agency has been commissioned to provide
security. Things take a turn for the worse,
however, when a murder is discovered just
before the opening ceremony.
JUVENILE
Bright Start workbooks, from Dalmation
Press. I’ve long believed that learning is—and
should always be—fun. These workbooks are
a great reminder of why young kids love to
learn the things we adults take for granted,
such as spelling and basic math. Designed for
children from preschool to second grade,
these workbooks are a great way to engage
them while they learn neat stuff, from how to
spell “velociraptor” to how to say hello in
German. As a bonus, each workbook comes
with a CD-ROM of the complete book.
