Candles, candles burning bright
COURTESY OF NII NORTHERN INT’L INC.
AN OLD PROVERB says, “It is better to light
a candle than curse the darkness.” Then again,
back when that proverb was coined, lighting a
candle might lead to cursing if the wax
dripped all over the furniture or the house
burned down because the curtains were set
on fire by a candle flame. It is entirely possible
those folks would have been thrilled with
today’s crop of LED candles.
LED candles are made of scented wax,
but they won’t melt unless they are left on a
windowsill in hot sunlight or on a hot stove.
They are more durable than a traditional candle, with the life expectancy of the light bulb
being 100,000 hours. That is equivalent to 13
to 15 years of regular daily usage. And LED
candles don’t give off heat, so you can use
them in the summer as well as winter.
The fact is, there’s more than one reason
to stock up on LED candles for your home
1. Ambience. A room filled with can-
dlelight is a room filled with aesthetic warmth,
a calming environment. Add a bottle of wine
and you’re ready for romance. Some LED
candles even come with timers and remote
controls so you can place them anywhere and
turn them on without having to climb a lad-
der or go through contortions to get to hard-
BRUSHING OUR TEETH is one of those
daily chores we embrace as part of a regimen of good hygiene. But let’s face it. It’s a
chore. And if there’s one thing I like, it’s any
item that can make a chore easier and more
efficient. That’s why I like the Sonicare
Healthy White Platinum Edition 2 handle-pack power toothbrushes (Item 625087).
One of the main reasons I like this
item is the new DiamondClean brush
heads. There are more bristles, which
make your teeth feel cleaner and appear
whiter. Also, the UV sanitizer helps keep
those brush heads clean.
But the best feature for me is the
Quadpacer function, which beeps every 30
seconds so you know when to change to
another part of your mouth. That keeps me
on track even when I get distracted, since
I am always multitasking. And the two-minute timer works well to make sure my
daughter knows when to stop brushing.
Beware, though! With kids, you might
have to wash the mirror frequently.
My daughter forgets to turn the
toothbrush off sometimes when
she takes it out of her mouth. Yet
that’s a small price to pay when
the kids get that clean bill of
health on the next trip
to the dentist. C
Experiencing a close shave
THERE’S NO DOUBT about the convenience and relative ease of using electric shavers. But some may doubt their effectiveness.
As is often the case with small appliances, the efficacy is in the usage.
Follow these easy tips, courtesy of
Philips Norelco, to get your shav-er's maximum effect.
• Wash your face to soften
the hairs, and dry your face thoroughly so there is no friction. Use
an alcohol-based pre-shave to
remove oils from your skin and
make your facial hair stand straight up.
If alcohol irritates your skin, use a powder-based version.
•Shave against the direction of beard
growth. Go with the grain if you experience
• Trim before you start your shave
and fully charge the razor. Hair-pulling can be caused by hairs
that are too long or a battery
that isn’t charged fully.
• Stretch your skin
slightly with your free hand
so the blades can lift and
cut your whiskers.
• Gently press the razor
to your skin so the head(s) can
skim the skin surface and follow
the contours of your face. Do not
press too hard—too much pressure can pinch
• Use the trimmer for your side burns,
hard to reach areas and longer hairs.
•Apply a soothing aftershave/moistur-izer and then let your skin air-dry.
•Try to use your new electric razor
exclusively. Since your skin needs time to
adapt, switching to and from a straight razor
will not help the process.
•Clean your shaver after each use,
according to the manufacturer’s directions,
and replace the blades at least once a year.—SF
