good time to focus on
keeping your eyes in
proper shape to last your
lifetime. Macular degeneration, a disease that affects a small area in
the center of the retina, is the leading cause
of blindness in North Americans over 55
years of age.
But if you’re younger than that, don’t stop
reading, because you’re in a great position to
help prevent it from happening to you. Here
are some answers to common questions about
this health problem.
What is macular degeneration
and what are the risk factors?
For most people, macular degeneration is
noticed as a gradual blurring of a spot in the
center of their vision, as cells in the macula—
a special light-sensing part of the retina—are
damaged. Those most at risk are older individuals, those who smoke and those who have
exposed their eyes to excessive UV light from
the sun or places such as tanning beds.

As with a number of other diseases, prevention involves leading a healthy lifestyle,
including eating a healthful diet, avoiding
smoking and reducing exposure to UV light,
especially if you have other risk factors. An
eye-healthy diet should include red and
orange fruits; broccoli, spinach and other vegetables; and fish rich in omega- 3 fatty acids.
Regular visits with an eye-care professional can help identify the disease in its early
stages so that it can be treated right away.
