Safe turkey frying
WHILE ROASTING and grilling are traditional methods for cooking Thanksgiving turkeys, frying is gaining popularity—and sparking some major safety concerns. The National Fire Protection Association reports that fires caused by outdoor gas-fueled fryers are responsible for five deaths, 60 injuries, the destruction of 900 homes and more than $15 million in property damage each year. Still, the quest for a perfectly cooked turkey goes on. If you’re going to try frying, Ameriprise Auto & Home Insurance, one of Costco’s member-service companies, offers these safety tips to help keep turkey frying
tasty and accident free.

• The turkey should be completely thawed
and dry before cooking in hot oil.
• Place the turkey fryer in an open area
away from any structures that could catch fire.
• Have at least 2 feet of space between the
propane tank and the fryer burner to reduce
the fire risk.
• Position the fryer so that any wind will
blow the heat away from the propane tank.
• Center the pot over the burner on the
cooker; follow the manufacturer’s instructions
about the proper amount of oil to use.
• Check the oil temperature frequently;

if smoke is coming from the pot, the oil is
overheated and the burner should be
immediately turned off.
• Make sure to cover any bare skin
when adding or removing food from the fryer.
Lift and lower food slowly to help reduce splatter and avoid burns.
• If a fire occurs, immediately call 911.
Do not try to extinguish an oil fire with water,
as it could spread the fire.
