Debate goes on
Carol Burnett fan
The article “So glad we had this time ...” in
the October edition of The Costco Connection
certainly brought back fond memories of
[Carol Burnett’s] hilarious show and her characters. I caught myself chuckling as I read the
piece just thinking about Carol, Harvey, Tim,
Vicki and all the rest. Perhaps my favorite is
the scene with Tim Conway as a careless dentist with the novocaine. I have never bought a
DVD set of anything, but The Carol Burnett
Show may be the first I’ll own just to laugh
Keeping an eye on shingles

I applaud your article “Shaking the shingles” in the October 2012 Connection for
increasing awareness about both this important condition and the vaccine to prevent it.
However, I think it is important for your
readers to know a bit more about ocular

In response to the October
Debate, “Are ‘
stand-your-ground’ laws a good idea?”
YES. This law was designed to give people a
way to defend themselves without prosecution or persecution.
NO. All conflict should try to be resolved
without deadly force.

shingles, formally called herpes zoster oph-thalmicus (HZO).
In about 15 percent of shingles cases, the
rash occurs on one side of the forehead. In
more than 70 percent of these patients, there
is eye involvement on the same side as the
rash, especially if the rash spreads down the
side of the nose.
Ocular involvement can include eyelid
scarring, infection/inflammation of the cornea, inflammation of the front chamber of the
eye, infection/inflammation of the back part
of the eye and weakness of one or more of the
cranial nerves that control eye movement.
As HZO can result in long-lasting eye
pain and poor vision, I urge all of your readers who develop shingles around the eye to
have a comprehensive evaluation by an ophthalmologist (eye M.D.) qualified to diagnose
and treat this potentially blinding condition.

Praise for Pat
Just wanted you to know how much I’m
going to miss Pat Volchok’s special brand
of reporting and writing. Her articles were
always interesting and very well researched.
I used the information in them to help me
make shopping decisions at Costco. I’m so
sorry to have her go and wish her all the best.
I’m especially pleased that according to [edi-tor] David W. Fuller, “her legacy of engaging
and informative reporting will continue.”

Enabling the disabled
I was pleased to see the article [“Em-
ploying the disabled,” October 2012] in The
Costco Connection. When I see a disabled
employee out in the workforce it just makes me
smile; these folks have been given a little extra
patience and love. Thank you employers for
giving us all a chance whether big or small.
