and cookies rise to the occasion
IF YOU ARE like me and the kitchen is sometimes a conundrum, there may be times when
your homemade baked goods don’t necessarily
say, “I love you,” but rather, “This pairs well
with an antacid.” Save time and wasted ingredients this Valentine’s Day by leaving the treat
making to Costco’s bakery. Members can pick
from a variety of festive sweets, including some
newcomers to the bakery table: Kirkland
Signature™ raspberry-filled shortbread cookies
and a fresh Valentine’s Day cupcake design.
The new cookies will have you inhaling
every last crumb. Two scalloped shortbread
layers are sandwiched around a sweet raspberry filling. The raspberries are harvested in
Europe, where they grow rich in flavor—a
perfect balance to the buttery shortbread.
“This is a very high-end item,” says
Melanie Silva, director of research and development for Costco’s bakery and food courts.
“Also, most grocery stores that sell this style of
cookie top it with doughnut-coating sugar,
which is really powdered sugar mixed with
cornstarch. Instead, our cookies are finished
with decorative stripes of melted white choco-
late, which tops them off nicely.” Each 28-ounce
package contains 16 cookies for $9.99.
Cupcake lovers will salivate for the six-pack of Kirkland Signature Valentine’s Day–
themed cupcakes. The white cupcake layer is
topped with white buttercream icing and
hand-piped frosting hearts in pink, purple
and orange. Did I mention there are also lots
“It’s really a complex cupcake,” says
Melanie. She adds that $6.99, which is what
Costco is charging for the six-pack, buys only
two cupcakes at many boutique bakery shops.
If you and your sweetheart can’t scarf all six in
one sitting (and you’ll be tempted), they also
freeze well for a later treat.
Regular offerings will also be available,
such as the half sheet cake with Valentine’s Day
décor, red velvet cake and the All-American
chocolate cake. You should also be aware that
on February 15 the Valentine’s Day cupcakes
will be replaced by carrot cake cupcakes, which
contain the same ingredients as the popular
whole carrot cake, but without the filling.
So this Valentine’s Day, have your cupcake
and eat it too (literally): Focus your attention
on your loved one and not on the crème-brulée-turned-raging-fire in your kitchen. But,
