EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard
and Visa. The three companies recently
introduced a new global standard for payment cards based on innovative chip technology, which helps authenticate the
cardholder and reduce fraud from counterfeit cards. To date, more than 1 billion EMV
cards are in circulation globally, and can be
accepted by the nearly 20 million EMV terminals. In the U.S., every physical point-of-payment system that now accepts a
magnetic-stripe card will be updated to
accept contact and contactless EMV cards,
as well as key fobs, watches and/or other
devices with the technology. They will also
be able to accept payments via a near-field
communication contactless device.
The upgrade to the new technology
will be a positive step for all merchants,
but there’s another reason it should be
done. Beginning October 1, 2015, there will
be a liability shift from the card issuers to
merchants of any size, excluding automated fuel dispensers (“pay at the pump”).
Merchants not using compliant EMV point-of-sale solutions will be liable for domestic
and cross-border counterfeit credit card
fraud committed at the point of sale.
