TRYING TO EXPAND your workforce, but
having a hard time finding the right employees for the positions? Maybe your job
descriptions are turning off prospective candidates with unclear jargon and expectations. In the Intuit Small Business Blog
( blog.intuit.com), Costco member Jamie
Schneiderman, founder and co-CEO of Clear
Fit, which helps organizations find job candidates, says that employers need to make
sure job posts cover the following.
Job title. Unusual job titles that make
sense internally may not appeal to a wide
audience. Avoid confusing or misleading lan-
guage. Don’t say “ambassador of first impres-
sions” when you really mean “receptionist.”
Responsibilities. What can candidates
expect on a daily basis? Any list of tasks
should convey whether the job will be entry
level or higher up on the chain. Tell them what
they will be responsible for, but also be aspira-
tional and tell them where they are going.
Cultural fit. The tone and wording
should help candidates determine whether
they’re a good fit for your business. For
example, a Web startup aimed at college stu-
dents may want to be a bit snarky, whereas
FROM OCTOBER 15, 2013, to January 2,
2014, General Motors, through the Costco
a small CPA firm may want to come across
as formal and serious.
Required skills. State your must-haves
here, such as a driver’s license for a delivery
person or experience with HTML coding for a
website manager. Be clear about what skills
and qualifications are mandatory, such as
certifications or prior training.
Your expectations. Ask for personal
information that may not be evident on a
résumé. Do you need someone who never
misses a deadline? Someone with a flexible
schedule who can work at a moment’s
notice? Are people skills a key requirement?
Salary and benefits. Job descriptions
that include compensation numbers tend to
elicit better applicants. Provide a compensation range and mention significant benefits,
so candidates get an idea of how much
you’re willing to spend.

ACCORDING TO THE Employee Benefit
Adviser (EBA; http://eba.benefitnews.com),
“With a national election on the horizon, it’s
not likely much will be done legislatively to
address the nation’s retirement crisis in 2014.”
EBA spoke with several industry insiders who
shared their predictions for what will be on the
table in the coming year.
Will Social Security still be here in 20
years? Expect Social Security to be in the news
more in 2014. Trustees forecast that by 2033
there will be a 23 percent reduction in benefits
payable across the board. Potential solutions to
the problem of making the system solvent
include a cost-of-living adjustment, raising or
removing the current $113,600 earnings cap or
raising the Social Security tax by 1. 33 percent
for employers and employees alike.
Will there be a change to the way we
save for retirement? Despite the scarcity of
election-year action, real discussions on the
tax-preferred status of retirement savings plans
will likely occur. Such discussions might
include lowering the amount people can save
per year or phasing out the tax deductibility
after a certain rate.
How can employees get more out of
their retirement plan? Employers that have
not done so already will continue to reinstate
the employer match into plans that removed
the match during the recession, looking at the
retirement plan now as an attraction and
retention tool. As a result, there will be a corresponding focus on improving participant
outcomes so that employees can get more out
of their retirement plans.
