FOUR;MONTH;OLD Bailey impressed her neighbor, pet photographer Karen Hoglund, enough for
Hoglund to request the boisterous beagle, floppy-eared and full of energy, for this special shoot.
“It’s hard to do puppy photos without them
looking cute,” Hoglund says, but insists that this
photograph is different. “I like that it’s not ‘cutesy.’ I
really captured her look and personality. We were
making all sorts of funny noises to get her to look
like that. It was this fleeting moment where she
looks so serious.”
Framed inside a friend’s old Chevy Bel Air, the
shoot was tricky to set up, but the resulting photos
benefited from Hoglund’s dedication, as well as a bit
of good fortune.
In the photograph, the tag on Bailey’s collar
appears to match the turquoise color of the car, but
it is actually a reflection in her silver tag. While the
color repetition is striking, Hoglund says collars
usually distract from the focus of the photo. “I’m
thrilled to give my neighbors a photo like this,” she
says of her winning entry.
Hoglund was awarded a $1,500 Costco Cash
card for her winning entry, along with a copy of
Photoshop Elements 11. She says that Bailey will
share in the spoils as well.—PS
