AS TARREN PUGH, who turned 2 years old last
December, watered his grandparents’ garden, father
Danny Pugh was able to capture his excitement.
“I just jumped out there!” Pugh says of the rush to
capture the scene. A photo hobbyist with a camera close
by, he couldn’t miss this moment.
In the backyard of the very house where he grew up
in Huntsville, Alabama, Pugh caught his son playing
with a hose for the first time. The excitement and nostalgia of childhood helped define the moment.
“He was like, ‘Whoa! Check this out!’ ” says the
delighted parent. “I was trying to capture the essence of
growing up, being young, not really knowing the world.
It’s not just about him, it’s about seeing him grow. It’s the
transition between an infant and becoming a child.”
Pugh feels the sentiment encapsulated in this image
will hit home with parents, but the youthful exuberance
shown by his son will resonate with anyone. “You can’t
put it into words; you just get it,” he exclaims.
Pugh calls photography a hobby that he lets pay for
itself. For winning, Pugh was awarded a $1,500 Costco
Cash card and a check for $7,500.—PS
