IN AUGUST, we turn our attention to things that will help
our kids have a successful school year. We also have to get
back into a routine of juggling busy schedules and packing
nutritious lunches and snacks. Nutritionist Deborah Herlax
Enos offers her tips on healthful after-school snacks on
Nuts are high on her list—and they also are the foundation for Sahale Snacks, the subject of our story on page
52. Sahale Snacks has been supplying Costco with its tasty
and wholesome snacks since 2005. What began with two
outdoorsmen looking for healthful and flavorful food for
their climbing trips has evolved into a successful and sustainable business.
While I try to eat healthy foods most of the time, I also subscribe to the theory of
everything in moderation. Every now and then, you just have to indulge a little and, well,
bacon just makes everything better. We’ve included recipes using one of America’s favorite
ingredients on page 56. I recently tested John Thomas’ Bacon-Wrapped Onion Rings on
some friends and we all agreed that they are worth a few extra calories!
Wine in moderation can also be a good thing. Costco’s wine expert, Annette Alvarez-Peters, introduces us to several accomplished women in the wine industry, once dominated
by men. These women share a passion for creating fine wines, several of which are sold at
Costco. See our story on page 62.
If you have time to squeeze in one final vacation before school starts, you may want to
hit Universal Orlando Resort for the opening of Diagon Alley (page 69). Harry Potter fans
will love the roller coaster through the depths of Gringotts Bank. Costco Travel offers a
variety of vacation packages to these and other theme park destinations on Costco.com.
Be sure to stock up on school supplies and clothes at Costco. Our Buying Smart story
on page 72 features kids’ outerwear. You’ll also find additional items, including school uniforms, on Costco.com. Happy August from all of us at Costco! C

AS I’VE GOTTEN older, I’ve noticed I’ve become interested in things I never dreamed I’d have any interest in.
In a recent get-together with old (as in longtime and, yes,
old) friends, I tracked the topics of our conversation: rose
gardens, grandkids, the pros and cons of paying off mortgages, power walks, sciatica and the daily need for fiber.
Likewise, I never pictured myself as a fan of the TV
show Jeopardy!, but there we are most evenings, right
after the nightly news, watching it. Each show yields
something interesting, whether it’s an impressive contestant, an odd fact or a go-for-broke bet on the final question. And yes, I know that the official language of Tahiti is French!
When we considered ideas for this month’s cover story, Ken Jennings was at the top of
the list. Our August issue has a “back to school” theme, and we loosely interpret this to
mean learning for all ages. Jennings, as you’ll read, won a record 74 games on Jeopardy!—
that’s 54 more than the next-winningest contestant. He’s a Costco member, and when
we contacted him about being on our cover, he enthusiastically accepted, saying this was
something he had dreamed of ever since seeing Jimmy Kimmel on the cover of The
Costco Connection in 2009.
Jennings, of course, has a fascinating, unique mind. He has the bandwidth to remember all the trivia it takes to win on Jeopardy!, but also the uncanny logic to solve the show’s
puzzles. We made sure to ask him for brain-exercising tips for the rest of us. His biggest
one: Engage and be active. Or, when it comes to the brain, use it or lose it.
After you read our story, make sure to check out the two mind-boggling videos of
Jennings on Jeopardy! in our online and newsstand editions. See page 12 for details. C
