COSTCO BUYERS are always looking for
ways to improve the quality and value of
products and services. Such was the case with
the reading glasses program.
Even after 20 years as an extremely successful and popular item, the package of reading glasses has been revamped, with new
designs, a new optical power level and a new
hard case with a microfiber cleaning cloth.
The three-pack, which is available in four
designs in three colors, sells at the same low
price, $18.99, in the warehouse and on
“We worked very closely with the Costco
team to provide the highest-quality product at
what would be considered a reasonable price,”
says Michael Cotton, executive vice president
of sales for Icon Eyewear, frame supplier for
Costco’s Midwest and eastern regions.
All of the glasses have an anti-reflective,
scratch-resistant lens coating that offers UV
protection, reduces eyestrain, removes distortion and reduces glare.
“The frames are high quality and dura-
ble,” says Cara Serrecchia, national account
sales manager for FGX International, frames
supplier for Costco’s western and
The reading glasses come in seven
levels of optical power, or diopter strength,
starting at 1. 25 and going all the way up to
2. 75 in increments of 25. The range of
strengths ensures that the glasses meet the
needs of most people, Serrecchia says.
The glasses display area in the warehouses also comes with a new lens tester that
is easy to use, she adds, in helping to select the
correct diopter strength.
The fashionable frames are offered in a
stainless steel and titanium alloy blend memory metal, an aluminum alloy blend, a memory plastic and a plastic tortoiseshell frame.
The most notable is the new titanium alloy
blend, which is a more flexible material.
“The titanium frame is a very durable
metal alloy,” Cotton says. “You can literally
wrap it around your finger without it breaking. It is a very flexible metal that bounces
back to its original shape; that is why they call
it a memory metal.” C
