Journey of inspiration
Louis Zamperini, on the cover of the
December issue [“A hero’s journey”], was a very
special Christmas gift for my book club. We
read Unbroken together years ago, and we were
all moved by his remarkable life story. Laura
Hillenbrand’s painstakingly accurate research
and writing is woven into a narrative that must
be fiction; how could one man have lived
through all of this—and yet he did. We have
been waiting for this film with bated breath.
Imagine my delight, while reading your
remarkable profile, to discover that Costco carries a young adult version.
As a high school English teacher, I am constantly looking for modern nonfiction titles to
encourage my students, especially boys, to read.
This story has everything that might interest a
reluctant young male reader: teenage rebellion,
running races (sometimes away from the cops),
the 1936 Olympics with Jesse Owens and Hitler,
World War II heroism, survival on the high
seas, a Japanese POW [prisoner of war] camp,
return to “normal” life, a love story, Christian
redemption and a long life filled with good
deeds and service. It is a [detailed] insight into
a life well lived and a fine story for today’s young
men and women to read and aspire toward.
Thank you for the gift of this inspiring profile.
