to avoid getting any on the windows and
Wash the windows last. Use any standard
glass/window cleaner and high-grade paper
towels, which will pull off more dirt. If you
have tinted windows, check with a professional
before washing the inside of them yourself.
Using standard cleaners can damage them.
Dry windows with newspapers, as the tougher
texture will remove any dirt you missed.
Wax using a paste wax, which will usually
come with an applicator. Use that to apply the
wax and a new or clean microfiber or terry
cloth to take it off. Start where you can reach.
Make sure to wax the car in the shade—
and make sure the car is completely dry. If
you leave wax on too long, it can ruin the car’s
clear coat and paint.
Some people choose to use tire shine at
the end to blacken the tires and give them a
new-tire look. Shifflett stresses applying it
with a rag or a terry cloth. If you just spray it
on, when you drive away, it will come off and
get all over the sides of your car.
Avoid paint damage
“There are two things that ruin paint,”
says Shifflett. “One is bird poop; the second is
tree sap.” Bird poop will eat through the car’s
clear coat, which protects it from rust and oxidation. Clean it off as soon as you see it.
If you notice tree sap on your car, take it
to a professional immediately—not at a
mechanical car wash, which won’t remove it.
Professional detailers have just the right supplies and methods to remove sap. Because sap
dries almost immediately, it will literally eat
through the clear coat and damage the paint.
If people try to get it off themselves, they will
most likely cause more damage. It’s the one
time, Shifflett says, when folks need to take
their vehicle to a professional auto detailer to
get it removed.
Caring for your car properly will keep it
looking great for years to come. C
