COSTCO HEARING Aid Centers recently celebrated 25
years as a value-added part
of the Costco family. According to statistics generated
by the Hearing Industries
Association, Costco’s hearing aid sales have grown
by approximately 20 percent per year for the past
five years, making Costco
one of the biggest hearing
aid retailers in the U.S.
“At Costco, a basic in-the-ear hearing aid can cost
as little as $500, and more-advanced models sell for
$900 to $1,500 per individual
hearing aid,” says Richard
Chavez, Costco’s senior vice
president in charge of ancillary businesses.
Beyond the value of the
hearing aids themselves,
there’s the service.
“At Costco Hearing Aid
Centers, we pride ourselves
on bringing high levels of
professional service to our
members,” says Christian
Anthis, Costco’s manager of
hearing aid operations, citing

FOUR YEARS AGO, as millions of people have, I
overcame my fear of social interactions by purchasing my first pair of hearing aids, at a Costco Hearing
Center. And not just because I work here. Costco is
one of the largest hearing aid retailers in the U.S.
Now, as I prepare to upgrade, I’m looking forward to
testing the new features in the sixth generation of
the Kirkland Signature™ Hearing Aids. Here’s why.
First, the Kirkland Signature 6.0 Hearing Aids
are manufactured by the same company as my cur-
rent pair, with which I’ve been extremely satisfied.
Christian Anthis, Costco’s manager of hearing aid
operations, tells me, “This manufacturer has been
top-rated in an independent study by Delta
SenseLab in Denmark. They evaluate preferences
among hearing-impaired subjects with moderately
severe hearing loss.”
Soris Parajon-Pena, Costco’s hearing aid buyer,
tells me the new hearing aids have advanced sound
technology with superior directional options and
noise-reduction circuitry, to better isolate the
sounds you want to hear. “What this means is they
can help you hear well in noisy situations,” she says.
A very cool new feature is geo-tagging. Soris
explains that this allows the wearer to manually
adjust the comfort settings and the hearing aid will
remember what is selected, so the next time you
enter that location, you won’t have to reset the aids.
And the advanced whistle protection reduces feedback, making it easier to talk on the phone.
Speaking of the phone, here’s something for
tech-aware folks. The Kirkland Signature 6.0’s
technology allows these aids to directly integrate
with iPhone and Apple devices, and selected
“The benefit is twofold,” says Soris. “The sound
from the devices feeds directly into the hearing
aids. So if you get or make a telephone call, you’ll
hear the other end directly in your hearing aids,
without having to lift the phone to your ear. And
there’s also a cellphone app that allows you to use
your phone as a remote control so you can change
settings without touching the hearing aids.” For
wearers who don’t have these Apple or select
Android devices, optional accessories are available.
Concerned about appearances? The Kirkland
Signature 6.0 Hearing Aids come in an array of colors to match your skin or hair color. Or perhaps
your sense of whimsy.
But I’ve saved the best feature for last: the
price. The Kirkland Signature 6.0 Hearing Aids
are $1,799.99 per pair, compared with $4,190 to
$5,598 for a comparable pair elsewhere. Additionally, the 6.0 comes with 10 batteries, a cleaning kit, travel pouch and case, plus a 90-day trial
period and unlimited follow-ups during the life of
It’s an amazing value, backed up by premier
service—a combination you’re not likely to find
