ONLY FOUR MONTHS to go until the big
payment processing liability shift. On October

EMV-enabled credit and debit cards will find
NINETY;FIVE MILLION adult Americans
have no life insurance, says the Life Insurance
Marketing and Research Association (limra.
com). According to a recent study, the reason
this number is so high is that many people are
simply unaware of how to go about getting
coverage, how much to get and what type of
policy they should buy. Here are three questions to get you started.
1. How much is enough? Calculate your
needs. How much will your loved ones need
when you die to meet immediate financial
obligations? Include things such as final
expenses (funeral/burial costs), medical bills,
debts and mortgage. Then consider your
finances and the standard of living you want
to maintain for your dependents.
2. What should you look for in an insurance carrier? Check ratings and rates. Don’t
settle for the lowest premium without checking the insurance company’s financial rating.
Ratings indicate the company’s ability to pay
claims. You want to make sure the company is
around in case you aren’t.
3. When do you need life insurance? As
EMV is the
way to go
your life changes, so does the need for life
insurance as part of a responsible financial
plan. And while you should feel secure knowing your policies will be there to help meet
your financial responsibilities and protect
your family, you should consider periodically
reexamining your insurance needs—
especially during the following life stages:
• Getting married
• Buying a home
• Getting divorced
• Owning a business
• Building an estate
• Planning for retirement
As you age, it can become more expensive
to buy life insurance. Moreover, certain health
conditions can boost premiums or make it
difficult to qualify for life insurance coverage
at all. For the price of a weekly specialty coffee
drink, you’d be surprised at how much cover-
age you could afford.
