AT THE HEART of every inkjet printer is the
ink itself. Printer manufacturers recommend
OEM—original equipment manufacturer—
cartridges, but third-party options exist and used
cartridges can often be refilled. Whatever your
choice, here are some basics you should know.
What types of inkjet ink are there,
and what are the characteristics
There are basically two types of inkjet ink:
pigment- and dye-based inks. Pigment-based
ink consists of a very fine powder of solid colorant particles suspended in a liquid carrier.
Dye-based inks are the standard ink type
How many pages can users
used in inkjet printers. They consist of colo-
rant that is fully dissolved and suspended in
liquid, and is often used for smoother and
more vivid color prints. Different brands tend
to have their own proprietary formula and
may use a combination of both types.
expect from each type of ink?
This varies by ink and depends on what
you are printing. The mode of printing—text
or graphics or photos, as well as whether you
are in draft mode or full presentation mode—
will affect the ultimate page yield. If you’re in
the market for a new inkjet printer, you might
want to research whose inks tend to get more
bang for the buck.
How can people determine which
printing modes to use to maxi-
mize the life of the cartridge?
If you are doing only document drafts,
print in grayscale or draft mode. For high-quality presentations or photos, select the
correct high-quality or photo print settings
for the best-quality print. If you tend to print
a lot and often, you may want to purchase
high-capacity cartridges instead of standard.
How should ink be handled?
Keep unused ink cartridges sealed in
their original packaging and store in a cool
and dark area.
Why buy at Costco?
Anyone who has used an inkjet printer
knows the real cost is in the ink. Costco warehouses and Costco.com offer exclusive XL
cartridges that produce 2. 5 to 3. 5 times the
yield of standard cartridges. Colin Wes, Costco’s
office supplies buyer, says, “When sold at
Costco in multi-packs, the saving is even
greater, driving down the cost per page. Other
stores sell XL cartridges, but they sell them in
single packs, and they’re very expensive.”
Warehouses carry the most popular cartridges, and a wider range of brands and
models is available on Costco.com.
