OCTOBER 2015 ;e Costco Connection 97
A little “wow!”
Alongside their core lines, Costco seasonal
buyers work hard to include a few special
“wow” products every year. These are grand-scale, jaw-dropping, show-stopping signature
creations you just can’t get anywhere else.
This year’s 6-foot pre-lit nutcracker (far
left) is a great example, as is the 12-foot pre-lit
Christmas tree (left) with white-to-multicolor
LED function, the 5-foot LED prancing deer in
gold glitter or the lighted snowman (both
below). The minute you put up one of these
items in your restaurant, shop front or foyer,
everyone will know Christmas has arrived.
“No one does scale and quality quite like us,”
says Kris, adding that the 6-foot nutcracker
was the first to sell out last year on Costco.com.
If January is the buyers’ time for ideas and
inspiration, July is when they refine, review
and test a short list of around 500 possible
products. In August the entire team meets up
in China on a global buying trip where they
get the chance to see prototypes.
“There we are, in the heat and humidity,
in our shorts and T-shirts, covered in tinsel
and glitter,” says Kris. “We aim to experience
products exactly as members would, so we’re
opening boxes, setting up Christmas trees,
putting up lights, hanging ornaments. You
find out very quickly if an item is going to
make decorating a pain or a pleasure.”
Packaging has a lot to do with the pleasure
and ease of the process. Who wants to fight a
tree that won’t go back in its box? Such things
can get December off to a frustrating start.
Costco’s product and packaging enhancements make this process convenient. Costco’s
artificial trees, for instance, use Perfect Shape
technology, which means the branches spring
into shape straight out of the box. They also
feature EZ Connect technology, which consists
of a simple three-pole assembly: Join the poles,
plug it in, the lights come on and the family
Christmas arrives in the aisles at the first
of October, and you’ll see exciting new lines
appearing until the beginning of November—
goods that have been nurtured through
months of planning, preparation and perfecting by a team of dedicated buyers. And in true
Costco style, once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Regardless of your festive decorating style, you
can find exclusive items of exceptional value
and quality at Costco.
Be sure to visit Costco.com too, for these
items, as well as items unique to the website.
I’m not sure how that 6-foot pre-lit nutcracker’s going to fit in the cart, though. Be
sure to ask one of the friendly Costco elves for
a hand. C
