AK p ser How to be a
for your health
By Daniel Lacerda
THE HOLIDAY SEASON is upon us. Along
with love and goodwill toward men and
women, this joyful time of year brings with it
a major uptick in activity as we rush here and
there buying gifts for loved ones, attending
parties, hauling out the ornaments, and trav-
eling far and wide to visit relatives and
friends. The stress that this frantic pace puts
on our bodies and minds can quickly erase
any warm holiday spirit we might be feeling;
and, unfortunately, this always seems to coin-
cide with not having enough time to exercise or
Yoga for holiday stress relief
engage in mindful, tension-relieving activities.
One of the many beautiful things about
yoga is that it can be used to create that perfect
space in your day in which you can stop every-
thing you’re doing and just breathe and be. It
doesn’t take much time, either. Performing
just one or two key poses can relieve stress,
stave off an oncoming headache, minimize a
hangover or ease muscle tension. The trick is
to be consistent. I promise you that carving
out five to 20 minutes every day, or even every
other day, to practice a few yoga poses can
make all the difference in body and mind.
Here are six of my favorite go-to poses
when the going gets tough around the holidays.
Try to hold each pose for 30 to 90 seconds.

Downward-facing dog pose
Adho mukha svanasana
(AH-doh MOO-kah shvah-NAHS-anna)
Downward-facing dog is meant to be a
relaxing pose, and it works wonders to
counteract the effects of long hours spent
traveling by plane or car. It’s also a terrific
pose to do with kids.
Side corpse pose
Prone poses that focus on flexibility, like the side
corpse pose, are perfect for relieving stomach
upset and achy muscles if you indulged in one
too many cups of cheer at the holiday office party.
Easy boat pose
Here are three modifications of the
easy boat pose, which is great for
improving and maintaining vital
strength through your core muscles.
