Finding the right life
insurance for you
A 2015 INSURANCE Barometer Study
by Life Happens and LIMRA (a
research, learning and development
organization for financial services
companies) says that 80 percent of
Americans overestimate the cost of
life insurance. In reality, it may be
fairly simple to get the policy you want
at a price that fits.
Maintain good health habits.
Life insurance rates are based on many
different factors, including your overall
health and lifestyle. For example, if
you’re maintaining a healthy weight
and don’t smoke, you may find that
rates are reasonably affordable. Even if
you do have a medical condition such
as diabetes or blood pressure concerns, demonstrating that you are
actively managing it may help you to
negotiate a reduction of your premium.
Get your policy sooner rather
than later. Typically, the younger you
are, the more reasonable your life
insurance plan will be. Getting a policy
at a younger age can also lock you into
lower rates, so if in the future you do
experience health issues, you can con-
tinue to pay a lower rate as long as
premium payments are made.
Consider layering policies. Many
people find that they need more coverage during a specific period of time in
life — such as when their kids are
young. That’s when it may make sense
to layer policies. So perhaps you don’t
need one large policy for your lifetime,
but you start with something you can
afford, and then add on another policy
for a set period of time.
Deal with a reputable provider.
Find a policy that offers the coverage
you need from a company that has
strong ratings and a track record for
paying out claims over many decades.
Be cautious of policies that offer insurance without a medical exam.
Typically, life insurance that doesn’t
go through a full underwriting process
means you will pay more in premiums.
