COSTCO HAS BEEN producing mouth-watering Danishes for the past 20 years, but
the bakery has officially outdone itself with
an even more scrumptious upgrade.
Instead of the former six-count pull-apart variety pack, two separate four-packs
of Danishes can now be mixed and matched.
Three regular flavor offerings will be cherry,
apple and cream cheese, and a fourth will be
a rotating seasonal flavor (the bakery is
keeping these seasonal selections a secret
until their release).
But it’s not just the packaging that’s
changed; even the recipe got a big overhaul.
The new Danishes are bigger in diameter
and fluffier, thanks to increased lamination,
a bakery technique for layering dough and
fat (in Costco’s case, a blend of butter and
margarine) to create flaky risen layers. The
result is a “more pleasing texture on the palate,” according to David Richman, assistant
general merchandise manager of Costco
bakeries. The Danishes are rolled, filled and
topped with streusel by hand, ensuring the
quality of each bite.
David admits changing a bakery staple
was risky: “Our original Danish was a leg-
acy item. It was like rolling the dice. But we
wanted to offer our members something
that was substantially better, and we hope
that our members can see the value in our
He says the mix-and-match format has
done well for both bagels and muffins and he
expects the same for Danishes, adding that
since they are now individually baked,
instead of having to be pulled apart, they’re
easier to serve at home, and could even be
resold in coffee shops or convenience stores.
The new Danishes sell for $7.99, and
are a perfect match for breakfast coffee or
tea, or as a sweet afternoon or evening treat.
Truly, you can’t go wrong, no matter the
time of day. Item #14510.
