anything that stimulates conversations
more than a campfire’s
warm glow on a lovely
summer evening? I
love how the light
reflects on the faces of
my family and friends.
Even if you can’t have
a real fire, nothing says “welcome to our
home” better than a well-lit outdoor space!
Beyond simply lighting up the table with
candles, festive outdoor lighting radiates an
inviting atmosphere. Here are some lighting
tips I hope you’ll find helpful. (See “Let your
light shine,” to the right, for examples of outdoor lighting products at Costco.)
Layer your lighting. For texture and
drama, use varied types of lights in different
places. Just make sure all of the bulbs in each
place are the same, so the bulbs’ color tones
match. Read the labels: White LED bulbs
come in a warm white and a cool blue white.
Create a ceiling. Different types of light-
ing help define your outdoor rooms, and
strings of large round bulbs or skinny
antique bulbs strung overhead create a ceil-
ing. Define “walls” at the perimeter of your
patio or yard with lanterns or landscape
lighting at the ground level, or with lights
along a fence. Illuminated umbrellas provide
more intimate spaces with daytime shade
and light at night.
Light the path. Outline pathways to
help your guests find their way. Start
with a “gateway” of two large matched
lanterns where your guests will arrive, and
place smaller lanterns at both sides of the path
all the way around the house. Light the way
from the house to the fire pit or other destina-
tion that isn’t apparent at nighttime. Make
sure any tricky places, such as sloping or
uneven pathways and stairs, are safely well lit.
