WHEN COSTCO MEMBER Ken Pitsenbarger’s car wouldn’t start after he finished
fueling, he discovered a great feature at the
Costco gas stations: the attendants.
Pitsenbarger says Devendra Tandel, an
attendant at the Costco gas station in Rancho
Cordova, California, noticed he was having
trouble with his car and came to assist him.
After pushing the car away from the pumps,
Devendra ran to bring his own car over to
give a jump-start.
Pitsenbarger wrote in a letter to Costco,
“[Devendra] was kind, calming and reacted
to assist me in an empathetic and compas-
sionate way. Costco is lucky to have an
employee like this!”
Trained and certified by both Costco and
the state, fuel attendants are stationed on the
fuel islands to help customers in a variety of
ways, including dispensing gas, keeping the
station clean and assisting with card issues.
“Costco gas stations have an outstanding
safety record thanks to the quality of our
attendants. They act as both safety and environmental stewards, and respond quickly to
protect both our members and their communities,” says Dwight Larsen, Costco gasoline
and car wash director of operations.
Safety tips at the pump
; Only licensed drivers should pump gas.
Children should remain in the car during this
process, since they are often not visible to
; Shut off the engine before fueling.
; Report all gas spills (no matter how
small) to the attendant for proper cleanup to
prevent evaporation or a slip hazard.
; To prevent a static discharge from igniting gasoline vapor, always touch a metal surface—like your car, away from the filling
point—with your bare hand. This discharges
any static energy accumulated each time you
exit your vehicle.
; Since static electricity can also accumulate on transported containers, approved containers must always be removed from the
vehicle and placed on the ground before filling. This grounds the container and eliminates
the static risk.—Christina Guerrero
