high. When PSA is elevated, a biopsy is usually the
next step, not surgery or radiation. The result of the
biopsy should then determine whether or not
aggressive treatment is appropriate. As a 16-year
survivor of prostate cancer, I’m happy to have had
the PSA screening.

Contact lens pricing
I appreciate Costco’s battle with unfair pricing
practices within the vision care companies [“New
contact lens prices at Costco Optical,” September
2016]. I had noticed that I no longer received a discount through Costco, but I had no idea why. This
will benefit my pocketbook.

A Great Reckoning author interview
It takes a good interviewer to get quotes for a
short article full of substantial insights [“Success
from failure,” September 2016]. Well written, Linda
Kay. Well said, author Louise Penny.

Book selection
In the Member Comments section of the
September 2016 edition of The Costco Connection,
there was a feedback regarding disapproval of
“right-wing-based books” advertised in the August
Connection.
Costco’s response was suitably middle-of-the-road, as it should be, and my only reason for bringing this issue up is to offer my support to your book
and magazine buyers to continue to maintain
impartiality in the selection process. Too many
business entities today feel that ( 1) they have to pick
a political side to openly support, or ( 2) they should
openly apologize to whatever side is offended for
whatever action was or was not taken.
When it comes to politics, not everyone will
be satisfied, regardless of the stance a business
takes. With this in mind I am taking this opportunity to express my support on behalf of Costco for
taking a neutral (diplomatic) stance, and I sincerely hope that both sides of the political spectrum will continue to be equally pleased, or
offended. If only we we could see the same attention to impartiality by our media, the entertainment industry and academia.

Uncommon scents
I’ve recently started to use aromatherapy as part
of my daily relaxation routine. I sit in a comfortable
chair with soothing music and soft lighting—just
enough to read my most recent copy of The Costco
Connection—and turn on my diffuser, which mists
calming essential oil scents into the air. While I was
enjoying my new habit today, I happened to flip
open the latest issue to your article about aroma
association [“Scents and sensibility,” September
2016]! What a pleasant surprise.

ADVERTISING
AND PRODUCTS
All ads indicate whether a
product is available in the
warehouse, on Costco.com or
both. Products are scheduled
to be available during The
Connection’s month of publication and are noted as in warehouse “early in month” (1st to
10th), “mid-month” (11th to 21st)
or “late in month” (22nd to 31st).
Shop early in the month for the
best selection of seasonal items.
Costco.com carries many of the
products available at the warehouses, and offers thousands of
additional items, including line
extensions and supplemental
products. Prices are usually not
listed because they have not
been finalized at the time of
printing and may vary from one
part of the country to another
due to shipping costs. We hope
members know to check Costco
first when comparison shopping.
To keep prices low, Costco does
not offer a telephone service
allowing members to call in for
prices or product availability.
DEBATE GOES ON

NO It would only benefit the company, unless they
could save money and pass that savings down to the

FEEDBACK
Slowing down to enjoy life
The September 2016 Fresh Views articles are as
perfect for families as they are for business owners.
With the back-to-school season upon us and the
holidays around the corner, how timely these articles are. So many of us strive for perfection in our
lives that it is killing us and our families.
I especially like the point on blocking websites
to make us more productive in less time, while keeping us on task. And: yes to tempering perfection!
While we delegate to co-workers, spouses and kids,
they are learning through this process.
This is what life is about: making time for ourselves and each other in more pleasurable ways!
—Sheba Olenik, Patterson, New York
Yay for PSA
The article on prostate cancer in the September
2016 issue of The Costco Connection [“Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month”] concludes with “What’s
risky about a PSA blood test?” It mentions unfortunate side effects of “overtreatment” from surgery or
radiation if the blood test indicates an elevated PSA.
I don’t believe any responsible urologist would
recommend surgery or radiation on the basis of an
elevated PSA test alone. My experience from that
situation 16 years ago was to have a biopsy, not surgery or radiation, after my PSA was found to be CONTINUED ON PAGE 13
