Kirkland Signature™ items
In reading the September 2016 Costco
Connection [“What’s in a name?”] I noticed
that one important fact was missed. It was the
fact that many of the snacks and foods you
stock are gluten-free.
Although I personally do not su;er from
celiac disease, my son does. I always make
sure I stop at Costco and pick up some snacks.

Kirkland Signature athletic shoes
I absolutely ;nd the Kirkland Signature
Men’s Athletic Shoe the best-value shoe in the
marketplace [“;e right ;t,” September 2016].
[Other] brands have nothing on these shoes,
except three to ;ve times the price. ;e comfort, style and durability are top-shelf.
I have found a new use for my “old”
shoes other than hiking or hard-core walking. About a month ago, I started gol;ng in
them. Now, I actually prefer them over my
golf shoes as they are more stable during my
golf swing. Plus I am able to “feel” the green
much better, thus getting a better read for
speed and slope.

Calling 911
As a 911 call taker and dispatcher for
more than 20 years, I really appreciated the
informative article in ;e Costco Connection
about tips for calling for emergency help
[“Calling 911,” September 2016].

IRA contributions
In “Finishing strong” in the August 2016
issue, Suze Orman refers to putting money
into an IRA account. Her statement leaves out
the most important fact. To make an IRA
contribution you must have earned income
that is at least equal to the amount of the
retirement account contribution.

Vaccinations
I was thrilled to see information on vaccination presented in the August 2016 edition. One note though: ;e article [“Taking
your best shot”] mentions that HPV causes
cervical cancer in women, but no mention of
the oropharyngeal (tonsil and base of tongue)
cancers in men and women (though particu-
larly men). ;is is the reason behind recom-
mendations to vaccinate boys and girls at 11
to 12 years old. Failure to mention the cancer
risk in men and recommendations for vaccination of boys ignores the epidemic of oropharyngeal cancers that we are seeing.

Students with diabetes
I o;er my most heartfelt thanks to you for
the article in the August 2016 issue, “Tips for
students with diabetes.” As the parent of a
Type 1 diabetic child, it was amazing to see
the condition spotlighted. ;e suggestions for
and explanations of what it takes to keep a
child with T1D safe and healthy, especially at
school, were thorough and accurate.
So o;en articles about diabetes do not
distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 (or
any of the other types), and it’s maddening
when people assume that my child’s blood
sugar can be “controlled” simply by making
lifestyle choices or that this autoimmune disorder can be cured with diet or nutritional
supplements. Both types present their challenges, but most children living with diabetes
have Type 1. ;eir needs can be quite complex, and there is not yet a cure.
