Carbon monoxide safety
CARBON MONOXIDE is impossible to
see, taste or smell, so it can kill before
you even know it’s there. Ameriprise
Auto & Home Insurance, a Costco service provider, wants you to understand
how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning to keep you and your family safe.
Where does carbon monoxide come
from? According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, it can originate
from unvented kerosene or gas space
heaters; backdrafting or leaking chimneys and furnaces; gas water heaters;
gas stoves, wood stoves and ;replaces;
generators and other gasoline-powered
equipment; and automobile exhaust
from attached garages.
How can I tell if carbon monoxide is
present? Purchase a carbon monoxide

lower half of the wall, and replace the
batteries annually. As with a smoke

How can I prevent carbon monoxide
poisoning? Your risk of carbon monoxide
exposure rises when temperatures drop.
Have your heating systems inspected
annually by a trained service technician;

flues open when in use; never use gas
appliances such as stoves or dryers for
heating your home, or idle an automobile
inside a garage; and never use a generator
inside your home or garage. Routine
maintenance on devices at risk for emitting carbon monoxide can help reduce
your risk of carbon monoxide exposure.
What are the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning? The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention says low levels of
carbon monoxide can cause headache,
fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and
dizziness. Higher concentrations can
result in vomiting, loss of muscular coordination, mental confusion and loss of
consciousness, as well as flu-like symptoms after leaving home. Extended exposure at high levels can be fatal.
