WHILE HALLOWEEN is celebrated in
October, another, lesser-known holiday is
also celebrated this month, and it may be
just as popular as Halloween. October is
National Pizza Month.
Of course, Americans across the nation
don’t need a specific month to celebrate the
joy of eating pizza, as they do it year-round.
According to Pizza.com, there are an estimated ;;,;;; pizzerias in the U.S., and ;;
percent of Americans eat pizza at least once
No one is sure exactly when chefs first
spread a tasty sauce onto baked bread. Some
historians say pizza started in the ancient
Middle East, where Israelites, Egyptians
and Babylonians ate flatbread baked in mud
ovens. The first pizza with actual toppings
was made by the ancient Greeks and
Romans, who ate baked flatbreads topped
with olive oil and spices—similar to what
we today call focaccia.
Modern pizza may have started in the
kitchen of Italian baker Raffaele Esposito
of Naples. Legend recalls that he was called
upon to make a dish for Italian King
Umberto I and Queen Margherita when
they visited Naples in ;;;;. The pizza he
presented to them featured fresh tomatoes,
mozzarella cheese and basil—which today
we call pizza Margherita. However, there is
a side note to this legend, as some historians
have said that flatbreads with toppings had
been sold by street vendors in Naples for
years before Esposito made his dish.
In ;;;;, the first official pizzeria
appeared in the United States. A man by
the name of Gennaro Lombardi applied to
the New York City government for a license
to make and sell pizza at his grocery store
on Spring Street.
During October, go ahead and celebrate
Halloween. But enjoy some pizza as well.
