TOM HANKS is a force
in Hollywood. And
now he’s taking on
the publishing world
with his first book,
In this collection
of 17 short stories,
great affection, humor
human condition and all its foibles. The
stories are linked by one thing: A type-
writer plays a part in each of them.
Asked what he’d
most like readers
to know about this
book, Hanks says,
“Each story landed in
my noggin sometime
in the last 61 years,
and took me this long
to work it out on
paper. I hope the read-
ers recognize themselves in the pages.”
Uncommon Type (Item #1195313,
available now) is in most Costco
recipe book,” explains Perkins. The kids
are encouraged to make bread over the
weekend. The recipe makes two loaves.
One is for the child’s family. The other is
brought back to school to be donated to a
local food pantry or shelter.
For King Arthur, Perkins explains, the
overall goal—from the magazine to the
hotline and the website to the classroom—
is “to meet people where they are in the
kitchen and help them have the best baking experience.” C
mon, salt and brown sugar in a large bowl. Cut in the
butter until the mixture forms sandy pieces. Mix in
the egg. Reserve 1½ cups of the mixture and pat the
rest into the prepared pan.
Mix the raspberry preserves and lemon zest together
in a small bowl. Spread the mixture on top of the crust.
Roll out the remaining crust mixture to ¼ inch thick.
Cut the dough into ½-inch-wide strips and lay them
1 inch apart on top of the jam. Reroll the scraps as
needed to form enough strips to make a grid pattern.
Bake the bars for 25 to 30 minutes, or until lightly
browned. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack.
To slice, loosen the edges of the bars from the pan and
use the parchment sling to remove the slab from the
pan before slicing. Makes 24 bars.
