1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sliced pitted dates (cut in thirds)
1 cup hot water
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
13/4 cups flour
2 eggs
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
11/2 cups chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts (preferably walnuts)

11. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. Add baking soda to dates. Pour hot water over them
and soak 5 minutes, or until soft.
3. Cream butter/shortening and add sugar. Combine dates,
flour, eggs, cocoa and vanilla with butter mixture. Stir in
1/2 cup chocolate chips.
4. Pour into a greased 9-by-13-inch pan. Sprinkle with
the remaining chocolate chips and nuts.
5. Bake 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the
center comes out clean. Frost hot cake with a thin glaze
of confectioners’ sugar or frosting. Makes 12 servings.
