The Kirkland Signature 2006 Napa Valley Meritage is a classic example of a ‘New World’ Bordeaux blend. This wine is dominated by Merlot with an ample portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wine is deeply colored, elegant and richly fruity with soft gentle tannins that are balanced by black cherry and black currant flavors. This Meritage is sweetly perfumed with scents of red fruit coupled with spicy oak and cedar box aromas. The ripe tannins and gentle acidity lift and accentuate the burst of refined fruit on the finish. 2006 was a very successful year and the Napa Valley fruit has a defined sense of harmony and finesse. Napa Valley, California is recognized as the top vineyard region in the ‘New World’ for production of the famous varietals from Bordeaux, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This Kirkland Signature Meritage is blended and produced in the best tradition of ‘Right Bank’ Bordeaux. Here the Merlot plays the dominate role and is supported by ample additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2006 vintage is relatively small displaying more finesse and structure than the previous vintage. It is very much like the elegant vintage of 2001. Temperatures rarely exceeded 90 degrees during the days and the evenings were cool. The big heat spike during the growing season was in July. This created the perfect viticultural scenario for the production of high quality Merlot and for Merlot based wines. The cool evenings with an extended growing season helped to thicken grape skins, add color and concentration. It helped to accentuate Merlot’s natural sweet perfumed notes as Cabernet Sauvignon added black fruit character and body to the wine.
