The 2004 Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre is an elegant wine made exclusively
for the Kirkland Signature range of fine wines, by renowned fifth-generation Barossa winemaker Grant Burge.
Grant is committed to Australia’s most famous wine region, with the belief that vineyards are the cradles of wine
quality, driving him to develop the most extensive portfolio of premium-quality vineyards in the Barossa. The
Mediterranean-like climate of cold, wet winters and warm, dry summers provides ideal disease-free conditions for
growing ultra-premium grapes. Grant Burge wines have been awarded every major trophy and medal in Australia,
assuring products of a consistently high quality.
The 2004 growing conditions resulted in a promising vintage, producing grapes of optimum ripeness. A mild
January encouraged the even development of berry color and flavor. Quality expectations were maintained after
the Indian summer conditions of February, when the Barossa experienced optimum growing temperatures and an
absence of heavy rainfall.
The grapes for this blend were selected from low-yielding vines up to 110 years in age. The 41% Grenache, 36%
Shiraz and 23% Mourvedre were fermented separately, after which the juice was stored on skins for 30 days. This
specialized technique of extended maceration aided to further develop the structure, color and depth of the wine.
The wine matured for 15 months in 1- and 2-year-old French oak barrels prior to bottling.
This wine shows great vitality and complexity. Grenache
imparts a floral scent and sweet spice with plum and strawberry
fruit flavors. Shiraz brings rich flavors of raspberry fruit and
weight to the wine, with Mourvedre providing clove and mint
aromatics. Understated oak complements the elegant fruit-driven palate and the wine has a soft, silky, chocolaty finish.
Blended, these varieties have created a complex yet harmonious
Barossa wine, ideally enjoyed with duck and other rich game
and beef dishes.
