Central Otago, New Zealand
2006 Pinot Noir
Item #445554
Production: 6,010 cases
This Kirkland Signature 2006 Central Otago Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from the vineyards of Wild South in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. Central Otago is a rapidly growing region with an international reputation for some of the best New World Pinot
Noir. The Central Otago region is the world’s southernmost winemaking region. The cool temperatures
coupled with the extended days of sunlight during ripening and harvest are a perfect combination for producing
Pinot Noir, which is the most fickle and difficult grape variety to cultivate.
The grapes for this Kirkland Signature 2006 Central Otago Pinot Noir were harvested during a growing season
that saw a return to more typical weather patterns after the volatility of the previous two seasons. Early growing
conditions, with warm days, cool evenings and low rainfall, presented fewer frost events that allowed an even
flowering. The harvest was one of the earliest in years and yields were
very low. The small berries were thick skinned and concentrated
without any sign of botrytis or rot. This Pinot Noir went through slow
fermentation and twice-a-day gentle punch down in small vats. Maturation
extended to 14 months in small Burgundian, French oak barrels before
going into bottle. This Pinot Noir is very concentrated displaying qualities
of both the style and region.
