This Kirkland Signature Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir was produced
from grapes sourced from some of the top vineyard sites throughout
California’s Santa Barbara County. The last decade has helped
Californians to develop some of the best vineyard property in the country
and plant Pinot Noir in the right locations. Santa Barbara has lead that evolution with cooler sites, improved clonal
selection, and an emphasis on fruit and flavor development. Santa Barbara’s long growing season can begin as early as
February and continue on until late October. The yields are very low, which gives these wines good structure, vibrant
colors and great complexity. Steady wind gusts off the Pacific Ocean help to moderate the temperatures and extend the
growing season. The 2007 Pinot harvest began on October 1 and finished on November 4.
The winemaking for the Kirkland Signature Santa Barbara 2007 Pinot Noir is traditional. The tiny berries from the
2007 vintage gave the winemakers the opportunity to capture brilliant
color by punching down the cap several times a day in small, open-top
fermenters. Moderate temperatures for fermentation allowed the phenolic
development to continue without extracting bitter tannins. The wine was
matured with the influence of medium-toast French oak barrels, which
added sweet vanilla notes to the wine. Many have compared this vintage
to that of the terrific Pinot Noir vintage from 2001.
