The 2004 growing season had extreme heat early on and ended with a milder than usual January. This variable
weather led to improved crop loads and a longer hang-time, resulting in superb Shiraz batches. These excellent-quality grapes for this Kirkland Signature Shiraz came from the McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Padthaway
regions in South Eastern Australia. The McLaren Vale, with its well-drained loam soils over limestone, gives the
wine brightness and elegance. Langhorne Creek’s gray sandy loam soils give a velvety feel to the wine. Padthaway,
which has shallow soil over limestone, adds a lot of the big fruit components to the wine.
The grapes for this Kirkland Signature Shiraz were harvested at full flavor ripeness, the point when the winemakers
determined that the grapes were flavorful, juicy and sweet. The grapes were harvested into approximately 30
separate vineyard batches, giving the opportunity to blend and seamlessly weave together all the elements for
maximum softness, power and elegance. The wine was aged in the highest-quality American oak barrels for 14
months to allow it to mature and become supple and complex.
This Kirkland Signature Shiraz has an opaque, deep red color
with a scarlet rim. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry and cherry
carry onto the palate along with chocolate and spice. It is a
well-structured and balanced wine, displaying opulent, velvety
tannins and a plush ripeness. With its bold flavors and supple
tannins it drinks beautifully now and will continue to drink well
over the next few years.
