This Kirkland Signature Master Cask IV Napa Valley Chardonnay was produced from grapes sourced from some of the top vineyards throughout California’s Napa Valley. Napa is one of the premier locations in the world for producing Chardonnay. Unfortunately, vineyards producing Chardonnay in Napa Valley have diminished over the past decade in favor of producing more expensive red varieties. The 2006 Napa growing season started slow and wet, but a consistent long, cool growing period developed fruit complexity with a tart, juicy, citrus style. The growers, who were able to collect their Chardonnay before the October rains fared the best, as was the case with this Kirkland Signature Napa Valley Chardonnay Master Cask IV.

The winemaking for the Kirkland Signature Master Cask IV Chardonnay incorporates mixture fermentations in stainless steel tanks and small oak barrels. The stainless steel fermentation allows for long, cool fermentation temperatures which develop the bright, citrus and floral characteristics that Chardonnay can develop under these conditions. Two-thirds of the blend is fermented in small French and American oak barrels. Fermentation in barrel helps to fully integrate the toasty, yeasty notes from this mix of new, and one to two-year old barrels with toast levels from light to medium plus. The end result of utilizing differing fermentation vessels coupled with small oak barrel maturation is a multidimensional Chardonnay displaying elegance and medium-plus weight, with tropical fruit notes and honeysuckle.
