ALLERGIES ARE a sensitivity of your
immune system to otherwise harmless
substances, called allergens. When someone suffers from seasonal or indoor allergies, their body recognizes allergens as
foreign substances, which it seeks to
expel. The most common symptoms
include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes,
runny nose, and itchy throat or nose.
Allergy symptoms can also include sinus
pressure. If you suffer from allergies, you
know this can feel a lot like a cold.
A few signs that can help distinguish
• Symptoms appear all at once.
• Symptoms last weeks or months.
• Clear, thin, watery mucus.
Allergens have a variety of sources,
including animals, pollen, dust and
mold. While avoiding allergens can be
extremely difficult, there are actions you
can take to minimize exposure.
• Have heating and air-conditioning
units inspected and serviced regularly.
• Choose pillows, mattresses and
furniture labeled “hypoallergenic.”
• Peak pollen production can occur
in early morning, so try to plan outside
activities for other times of the day.
• A shower and change of clothes can
help remove pollens that may have collected on hair or fabrics while outdoors.
Allergy relief tips for parents
Kids can be too busy having fun to
stop and take care of their allergies. It’s
important that you have the right information to help manage their symptoms.
• Discuss your child’s condition with
the school nurse, teachers, coaches and
anyone else with whom your child has
• Store all of your child’s clothes in
drawers and closets. Try not to leave them
lying about the room.
• Track pollen and dust levels daily,
and plan outdoor play dates accordingly.
• Always keep children’s allergy medication, tissues, cough drops and eye
drops on hand.
If you take allergy medication, always
take the recommended dosage. It’s best to
always have your allergy medications on
hand. That way, if your allergy symptoms
act up, you can take your allergy medication and get on with enjoying your day.
