I hope my passion encourages women to
join our dynamic industry.
SP: I work with the local university to talk to
senior-class students, and encourage
women with a STEM [science, technology,
engineering and math] degree to consider
the brewing industry. Also, I offer my mentoring services and encourage grade-school
girls to get their feet wet in STEM fields.
AAP: If you could inspire a woman in
business, what would your message be?
SM: Seize every opportunity, especially
those that challenge you. Move out of your
comfort zone. Remember to treat others as
you would want to be treated.
KWH: Find work you love to do. If you love
your work, you will have a better chance at
being great at it. You’re going to have to take
some chances: Please do—it’s worth it.
SP: Speak up. Speak to younger females
who could use mentoring. Offer guidance.
Women need to hear and see other women
succeeding and supporting each other.
We all know extraordinary women and
we can celebrate their successes this
month. I’ve asked each person here to give
me one word to describe the most important quality of an effective leader. Their
words: vision, authenticity and integrity. I
ask you: What’s your word? C

WOMEN worldwide are
honored on International Women’s Day (this
year on March ;) for
their achievements and
inspiring accomplishments. This month, I
would like to celebrate
and highlight three prominent women in
the alcoholic beverage field.
Stephanie Macleod is the master
blender for Dewar’s Blended Scotch
Whisky in Scotland. In Dewar’s ;;;-year
history, Macleod is the first woman and
only the seventh person to hold this proud
title. She continues Dewar’s blending legacy and reputation.
Kathryn Walt Hall is the proprietor of
the luxury HALL and WALT wineries in
California. She has been involved with
wine since her family purchased a vineyard
in the ;;;;s. She has had a distinguished
career as a successful businesswoman,
attorney and community activist.
Stephanie Palladino is the brewing
manager for New Belgium Brewing in
Colorado. New Belgium is the fourth-larg-est brewer of craft beer in the nation. She
runs all aspects of day-to-day brewing
production, while managing and developing a staff of ;; brewers.
ANNETTE ALVAREZ-PETERS: What drew
you to your craft?
STEPHANIE MACLEOD: After graduating
in food science, I returned to study Scotch
whisky. I studied chemical structure and
the nature of distinctive flavor profiles.
Quickly fascinated with whisky, I took various roles in the quality and lab departments prior to training for master blender.
KATHRYN WALT HALL: I was born into the
business, as my father was a grape grower.
I grew up loving this lifestyle and the wine
STEPHANIE PALLADINO: I majored in
chemistry and loved science, but didn’t
want to be in a lab all day. While researching, I discovered brewing beer was about
chemistry. I found making beer is a beautiful blend of science and art.
AAP: What traits have been helpful?
SM: I’ve always tried to make the most of
all opportunities and not take them for
KWH: I am honest, caring and supportive of
people who work for me and of those outside
the winery. Business is done with and
through talented people. Also, there’s no
substitute for simply working hard.
SP: I’m a very resilient person who doesn’t
shy away from risk or a new challenge. It
takes resiliency to admit my mistakes,
brush myself off and move forward with
the lessons I’ve learned.
AAP: What are you doing to bring more
women into the industry?
SM: We have a Women in Leadership program with the mission to train, develop
and inspire a pipeline of high-performing
women and propel them into leadership
positions. I devise and implement local
events and training to support initiatives.
KWH: I am often a keynote speaker in the
wine business. This is my chance to share
my personal story and why I love my work.
