WHILE YOUR CLEANING needs may not
be quite as challenging as blasting lichen,
moss and algae off Thomas Jefferson’s nose,
the pressure washers in your local Costco
warehouse are made by the same company
that recently cleaned Mount Rushmore.
Kärcher, Costco’s pressure-washer sup-
plier, has cleaned many of the world’s historic
monuments, including the Colonnades in
Rome and the Statue of Liberty. So when tests
showed that the giant sculptures of the four
former presidents were in danger of becom- industry, and the gas-powered models come

The cleaning, which began July 4, 2005, —Will Fifield
was performed by a team of 15, including
Kärcher cleaning experts, professional roping
specialists and National Park Service rangers.
The team used pure water forced through the
powerful, heated, high-pressure cleaners and
nozzle systems created by Kärcher.
The Kärcher pressure washers sold at
Costco feature the same design and technol-
ogy as those used to clean Mount Rushmore.
Costco currently carries three models of pres-
sure washers— 1,750 psi, 2,650 psi and 4,000
psi. All three units will clean nearly any type of
surface, but the time it takes to complete a given
task decreases as the psi rating increases.
“We chose Kärcher because they build
very dependable machines,” explains Lester
Cox, Costco’s hardware buyer.

IF IT’S TIME to upgrade
Before buying a pressure washer,
Kärcher suggests that you consider
the following questions:
■ Will the unit be used in a business
application or for home use?
■ What is the average number of
hours you will use it per month?
■ Will any use restrictions be involved?
■ Will the pressure washer be operated
indoors as well as outdoors?
■ Is noise level or mobility a factor?

Lester Cox, hardware able in all Costco ware-
buyer houses, is a must.
It features 1/2-inch and
3/8-inch drive ratchets, an extensive
set of standard and metric sockets, nut
drivers, wrenches, pliers and hex keys.
Cooper Hand Tools designed this
set to meet or beat the standards set
by competitors such as Snap-On,
Craftsman, Husky and Stanley. Every
piece in this set exceeds the standards set by the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers.
The ratchet drive has a mechanism
that locks sockets to it so they will not
inadvertently slip off.
The set’s sockets, ratchets, nut
drivers and bits are made with
chrome vanadium, an alloy that is
added to carbon steel to give the set
increased strength and durability. C
