Plan ahead for
your passports
SUMMER IS ALMOST here, but how about
that passport you need for your trip?
New laws to protect U.S. borders have
created an overload for the State Department, thanks to record numbers of requests
for new passports. Processing time for getting
that vital document has never been longer.
What used to take four to six weeks now takes
10 weeks—or longer.
Even the expedited passport service,
which requires an additional $60 fee plus overnight shipping costs, has slid from two weeks
to four weeks or “possibly longer,” according
to the State Department.
As of last January, travelers, including children, flying between the United States and
Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda
are required to carry passports. Travelers going
by land or sea between those destinations
remain exempt from the new requirement,
but only until January 2008. That’s when
another regulation kicks in that will require
a passport, or a yet-to-be-determined identity
card being developed by the Department of
Homeland Security.
Another exemption to these changes
affects U.S. citizens traveling to or returning
directly from U.S. territories, including Guam,
Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American
Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth
of the Northern Mariana Islands. No passport
is required for those travelers.

The Costco Connection
Costco is still the speediest part of acquiring
a new passport. 1-Hour Photo in the warehouses can take and print two passport
photos in about five minutes for $4.99. Both
photos are needed for passport application.
