Know your
mpg quotient?
WITH GAS AT MORE than $3
per gallon across the country, it
makes sense to focus on helping
your vehicle get the most out
of that expensive commodity.
Common sense with just a dash
of rocket science will surely
impact your mpg quotient.
Speed. Fuel economy de-
creases rapidly when speed
exceeds 60 mph. Obeying speed
limits promotes both safety and
vehicle efficiency.
Cruise control. Maintaining
steady speeds without undue
speeding up or slowing down is
good for fuel economy. Engaging
cruise control makes this effortless.
Tire inflation. Properly inflated
tires roll more easily, reducing
the energy needed to move the
vehicle and therefore increasing
efficiency. Having tires under-
inflated by as little as 3 psi can
reduce efficiency by 1. 5 percent.
Weight. Is it a car or a storage
locker? Every 100 pounds of
extra weight decreases fuel
economy by 4 percent.
Maintenance. A properly serviced
vehicle runs more efficiently,
perhaps making as much as a
10 percent difference. Your best
guide to service schedules is the
owner’s manual in the glove box.
Rocket science (aerodynamics).
Drag, or wind resistance, eats
away at fuel economy. Even
having the vehicle’s windows
down when exceeding 35 mph
or lugging an unused roof rack
around makes a difference. If you
drive a truck, leaving the tailgate
up—not down—reduces drag.
