Prescription drug savings for
uninsured members
Since its launch last year, the Costco
Member Prescription Program (CMPP) has
enrolled more than 100,000 Costco members
who have no prescription drug coverage.
CMPP is a prescription discount program,
not an insurance plan. Members are required
to pay the discounted price for the prescription at the time of purchase.
Here are some frequently asked questions
about CMPP.

branded drugs. This is where you will see the
most significant savings.
Q. How much should I expect to save on
prescription drugs under CMPP?
A. The average savings for all medications is $3 to $5 per prescription. Participants
may see discounts ranging from $15 up to $50
for a 30-day supply of certain branded medications. Your local Costco pharmacy can provide pricing information.
Q. Is the CMPP only for uninsured Costco
members?
A. Yes, you must be a Costco member
and have no prescription coverage. The program is useful to fill the gaps encountered by
new employees who may not yet be benefit
eligible, recent college graduates entering the
workforce or small-business owners.

Prescription messages
The next time you pick up a prescription
at a Costco pharmacy, watch for additional
information that comes with the medication.
Costco is subscribing to a patient messaging
system that allows the pharmacy to communicate with and educate members at checkout.
The kinds of messages you should expect
to see fall into several categories. For example,
many patients pick up prescriptions that they
never use, or they might not follow the doctor’s directions in using the prescription.
Messages will encourage taking the medication as directed by the doctor for the full benefit of the therapy.
Other awareness messages might be issued
to alert some patients to the benefit from recommended supplemental or adjunctive medications, or alternative therapies. Other messages
might advise patients about the opportunity to
save money on a specific drug through the
Costco Member Prescription Program.
