school senior or college freshman. An ongoing conversation about money, credit and budget throughout
the college years may help the undergrad establish
good habits that guide lifelong financial decisions.

Banks offer college students free T-shirts, water bottles and key chains because student borrowers are
valuable customers. They tend to stay loyal to their
first card, making purchases for many years.
Credit cards, when not used wisely, can get students in deep financial trouble. Careless spending
can lead to high balances that are impossible to pay

time each month. Interest and finance charges that
accrue when a balance is carried over month to
month can sometimes double the debt.

toward a positive credit history, which will prove valuable when renting an apartment, purchasing a car and
applying for that first job or graduate-school loans.
Costco Services’ identity protection service, provided by Identity Guard, helps Costco members
understand their credit and protect their identity for
as little as $7.49 per month. For more information or
to enroll, go to costco.com and enter “identity protection” in the search box.
