Odds and ends
Opening up on closed caption
I recently looked at your DVD selection.
There were several that I would have bought.
However, I am hearing impaired and I have to
have closed captions (CC). I would think most
people my age would need the CC. Is there
anyway that you can get DVDs that way?

Kris Cramer, Costco media buyer, responds:
I took your question directly to the studios.
Paramount Pictures says 90 percent of their
product is closed captioned and has a CC logo on
the back of the movie case or on the spine.
Disney/Miramax indicates all of their movies
can be viewed with English subtitles by selecting
Languages on the menu. Twentieth Century
Fox/MGM say their DVDs have closed caption.
Universal says they offer English SDH (subtitles
for the deaf and hard of hearing). Sony includes
CC on most North American DVDs, unless the
original audio is not English, in which case they
include English subtitles.
FDIC and what it means to me
In Suze Orman’s article [“Balance dreams
with reality,” November 2008] she indicated
that “each individual can have $250,000 at
any single bank and have 100 percent assurance that the FDIC will repay every penny if
the bank runs into financial trouble.” It is
important to note that Congress has
increased the deposit insurance temporarily
until December 31, 2009. As of January 1,
2010, the insurance coverage will revert back
to the $100,000 limit. Caution should be
exercised in obtaining CDs that will exceed
the insurance coverage and mature after the
December 31, 2009, date.

You are correct. The Connection should
have included a reference to a more detailed
explanation of the new, temporary increase in
“Getting maximum FDIC protection,” on page
69 of the same issue.—Ed.
