rinse lice and nits off the comb under running water or wipe them off the comb with a tissue, dropping each tissue into a bag; when you’re done, tie the bag tightly and toss it out. Soak the comb in hot water for 10 minutes or store it in the freezer for 24 hours before reusing it. Comb daily between the initial and the second treatment, which occurs seven days after the first. The adult lice die in the first treatment; the second application kills any eggs that have hatched since the first treatment.

Steele adds there’s very little risk of lice spreading through toys. To be on the safe side, parents can put toys in a sealed plastic bag for a week to make sure all of the bugs die.

Let other parents, or the school or daycare, know about the infestation. Keeping mum means your child can spread them to playmates and be reinfested later.
