Ripley’s Believe It or Not!—Seeing Is
Believing, from Ripley Publishing. They say
seeing is believing, but even with photographic evidence staring back at me I found it
hard to believe some of the over-the-top
exploits, strange foods and incredible people
featured in the 2009 edition of Ripley’s. Now
celebrating its 90th year, Ripley’s still has no
trouble finding bizarre candidates to fill its
many chapters, which include “Strange but
True” (skydiving Scrabble players), “Crazy
Creatures” (a four-eared cat) and “Body
Oddity” (Ice Man). Contortionists, eaters of
cockroaches and a man who skateboarded
7,500 miles will have you asking yourself, do I
believe this or …?
read to move to the top of your pile? F ans
of Kellerman won’t be disappointe
and neither will newcomers. I like
way she tells the story primarily thro d—
the
ugh
dialogue, which keeps the plot moving at
a fast clip. In this Decker-Lazarus m
tery, Lieutenant Peter Decker is force
look into a cold case at a wealthy wo ys-
d to
man’s insistence. The body of a music p ro-ducer has turned up in the back of a
Mercedes. The wealthy woman is interested in
this case, as her favorite teacher died a similar
death 15 years earlier.

Fiction
The Mercedes Coffin, by Faye Kellerman.
Each year when August rolls around I start to
panic. Between cookouts and baseball games, I
can’t seem make a dent in my summer reading
list. If that’s a familiar scenario, may I suggest
The Mercedes Coffin as an action-packed must-
Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath, by Cornelia
Funke. What I love about the Inkheart trilogy
is that it addresses the question most (young)
readers have often asked: What if the characters in this book could come to life? For
12-year-old Meggie the answer involves
adventure, excitement and magic. Meggie’s
father, Mo, who repairs and binds books for a
living, can read fictional characters to life. The
adventure starts in the first volume, Inkheart,
which was recently made into a movie, and
continues through the series, leaving readers
with the question of how much influence we
have over our destinies. Also appealing is that
this is a great father-daughter story as Meggie
learns that she and her father have something
in common when it comes to magic.
