What’s New, Cupcake?, by Karen Tack and
Alan Richardson. I am not a very crafty person, so I have to admit that when I first picked
up a copy of What’s New, Cupcake? I didn’t
think it would be right for me. I’m happy to
say I was very wrong. The creative duo behind
the bestselling Hello, Cupcake! has managed
to produce another fantastic cupcake book
with fun, easy-to-make projects that look like
they came from a bakery. They give simple,
step-by-step instructions so that even the
most inexperienced decorator can feel like a
pro. All you need is a cake mix and candy and
frosting for decorating, and you too will be
making tasty treats that look like rubber
ducks, moose, Indian corn and more.

I’ve been impressed with her work on The

A Change in Altitude, by Anita Shreve. Early
in her career Shreve worked in Kenya as a
journalist, and she revisits that country in this
novel. Margaret, a photojournalist, and her
physician husband, Patrick, are sent to Africa
for a yearlong research trip. From a disastrous
climbing trip to Margaret’s work on a controversial newspaper, the relocation tests their
relationship and illuminates the fault lines
that lie below the surface. Luckily, most of us
never have to find out the limits in our intimate relationships—or what we’re truly capable of forgiving in ourselves and others.
