EACH NEW YEAR BRINGS changes and new beginnings. Such is the case for Costco and, in particular, for
our founder and CEO, Jim Sinegal.
Jim and Jeff Brotman, his partner and our chairman,
founded Costco in 1983, with our first warehouse in
Seattle. In 1993, Costco merged with the Price Company,
and today the company has grown to be the third-largest
retailer in the U.S. and the seventh-largest retailer in the
world, with more than 161,000 employees, 595 warehouses in eight countries and more than 64 million
cardholders. After a long and illustrious career, Jim is
stepping down, although he will remain on our board of
directors. Longtime Costco executive Craig Jelinek is replacing Jim as our new CEO.
Jim built Costco based upon the highest standards of ethics and integrity. He has
always believed that if you hire good people and pay good wages and benefits, good
things will happen. He also frequently reminds us that we must spend 90 percent of our
jobs teaching our employees. Those principles define our corporate culture and make
Costco a great place to work and to shop. We will miss Jim and will honor him by striving for excellence every day, and by providing our members with great service and great
values on top-quality items, just as he taught us.
Now that the holidays are behind us and resolutions are ahead of us, it is time to
refocus on healthy habits. To help you get off to a good start, this issue includes For
Your Health, a special section starting on page 59. You’ll find healthful new recipes to
power up your day, new exercise ideas and, yes, tips to lose those extra holiday pounds.
If you are thinking about a new look this year, you may want to check out our
updated Kirkland Signature™ cosmetic products by Borghese. We first introduced this
line of superior cosmetics in 2006. However, we recently gave many of the products and
packaging a face lift. You can learn more about our all-natural, exclusive formulations,
non-animal testing standards and proper application of our skin-care collection in the
Buying Smart article starting on page 92.
Best wishes for a new year full of great health, happiness and new beginnings from
all of us at Costco! C

IN ONE OF THE more extensive print interviews Costco
CEO and founder Jim Sinegal has granted (to ethix, an
online publication of the Center for Integrity in Business
in the School of Business and Economics at Seattle Pacific
University), he was asked what makes a good CEO.
“Good leaders make the determination how to run
the company and then communicate to everyone in the
company so that they all understand it,” he responded.
“Honesty and doing the right thing cannot be the respon-
sibility of management alone. Every level of the company
should understand what the rules are and every employee
in the company should be mortified if the company and its people don’t do what they are
supposed to do. The attitude has got to be pervasive throughout the organization: ‘We
don’t do that kind of stuff around here! Period!’ ”
Jim stepped down January 1, although he will be working in an advisory capacity for
the remainder of 2012. All of us who have had the benefit of his clear communication
through the years have little doubt that the rules, standards and values he defined and
by which he has run this organization will remain intact as we move forward under the
leadership of new CEO Craig Jelinek.
Jim told ethix, “We feel an obligation to build businesses so that communities can
count on us being there, suppliers can count on us being there, employees can count on
the security of jobs and customers who shop with us know that they can count on us.”
We feel that obligation too, Jim, and we will continue to do so. C
