WHEN COSTCO member Nicholas Sveslosky
was inspired to start a business 11 years ago
with his family, he never imagined their idea
would go to the dogs, literally. Today, Sveslosky
is the editor in chief of FIDO Friendly, a magazine dedicated to encouraging its readers to
embrace pet ownership wholeheartedly and
to travel with their dogs.
A socially conscious magazine, FIDO
Friendly’s premise is simple: “Leave no dog
behind®.” Articles encourage dog owners to
travel, engage and enjoy life with their pets.
Each issue is ;lled with travel tips, including
pet-friendly hotels and establishments, health
and wellness information, and thought-provok-
ing stories on topics such as helping homeless
pets and the importance of pet adoption.
Veteran pet advocate Betty White graced the
cover of their recently completed 50th issue.
In addition to publishing FIDO Friendly,
Sveslosky and his family created a month-long
pet adoption drive: Get Your Licks on Route
66. Get your Licks on Route 66, is a cross-country tour that in part traces Historic Route
66 to raise awareness regarding the importance of adopting a pet from a shelter. Their
third tour kicked off on September 7, 2011,
and by the end of the tour, 408 animals had
found permanent, loving homes, bringing the
total close to 1,000 pets ;nding new forever
homes since the tour’s inception.
What started as a simple idea grew
into a successful business, and mission, for
Nicholas Sveslosky. He says, “My goal is to
empower people to love their dogs even
more.”—Lysa Christopher

“Obesity is increasing every year,” says Debora
Montgomery, marketing manager for the inn.
“Each year our program gets bigger.” The inn offers weight-loss and ;tness maintenance to
keep dogs active, slim and stress free, says
Montgomery. Dogs work out on treadmills, do
aerobic swimming, go on nature hikes and
practice yoga and Pilates. In addition to the ;tness regimen, the inn feeds them nutritious
homemade treats and gives daily reports and
;tness tips to their owners.
For cats, the inn offers suite lodging, in-suite
videos, nature walks and play sessions with “cat
pamperers” wielding cat toys. Related cats may
play together or separately in specially designed
kitty playrooms.
“Keeping pets active and mentally stim-
ulated is very important when it comes
to good health,” says Joanne Morris.
“We are very excited to offer a pro-
gram that provides the jump-start
many owners need to get start-
ed on a new healthy lifestyle
for their beloved pets.”

FOR 34 YEARS, Costco members Walter Morris,
his wife, Marianne, and their daughter, Joanne,
have hosted four-legged guests at the Morris
Animal Inn in Morristown, New Jersey. Not just
any pet facility, the inn is a luxury resort, offering
lodging, spa treatments, grooming, daycare,
themed dog camps (Jersey Shore, anyone?) and
weight-loss programs.
The Morris Animal Inn ( www.morrisanimal
inn.com) started as a grooming facility in 1960,
run by Walter Morris Sr. As his customers began to ask for more services, Morris obliged,
and the Morris Animal Inn grew. When the
younger Morrises assumed the business, they
continued the trend.
The weight-loss camp, started in 2009, also
evolved in response to customer demand.
