THOUGH APRIL showers may bring May
flowers, this month’s DVD releases feature a
bouquet of top films. (All films are available
in Blu-ray and DVD.)
The Iron Lady. Meryl Streep won a Best
Actress Oscar for her portrayal of British
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a strong
woman in a male-dominated world. As an old
woman, Thatcher is battling dementia as she
looks back on the pivotal points in her life.
Streep, initially questioned as the choice to
play her, received wide acclaim as she proved,
once again, that she doesn’t just play a role,
she inhabits it. In addition to the Academy
Award, she won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA
(the British Oscar), and the film also won an
Oscar for Best Makeup. PG- 13.
War Horse. The name Steven Spielberg has
become synonymous with epic films with
heart and warmth. This one is no different.
Based on a novel that inspired a stage play, it
tells the story of a young man who bonds with
a Thoroughbred racehorse after his father
buys it as a plow horse. Albert (Jeremy Irvine)
tames and trains Joey, but they are separated
when the horse is drafted into the cavalry as
World War I erupts. That war is experienced
through the adventures of the horse as he
touches and inspires everyone he meets, while
pining for Albert. Keep plenty of tissues
handy, as Spielberg is a master at evoking
emotions. The film was named the American
Film Institute’s Movie of the Year and was
nominated for six Academy Awards. PG- 13.
Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol. After
the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) is
wrongly accused in the terrorist bombing of
the Kremlin, the president of the United
States initiates “Ghost Protocol,” which cuts
the IMF team off from any government assistance or acknowledgment. Ethan Hunt (Tom
Cruise) must clear the agency’s name while
