PHOTODISC
I am writing to express my appreciation
for the excellent article [“Breaking the silence”,
December 2012]. I am a former medical
librarian, and now a professor at the library
school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, so I have a professional interest in
quality health information for consumers. But
on the personal side, I have a teenage son who
was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the
age of 13.
As part of my advocacy for my son and
for all the people suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), I spend a lot of time
communicating with journalists who get very
basic facts about inflammatory bowel disease
completely wrong. What a pleasant surprise
to find a well-written, accurate piece about
IBD. This isn’t the first time I’ve found accurate health information within the pages of
The Costco Connection. But this article I took
personally, and I thank you.

Debate goes on
In response to the December
Debate, “Are social media actually making us less social?”
simmer. It only takes about a half hour since
all the chicken is already cooked. Drain
through a colander (most sieves strain out too
many good bits) and use as the base for a great
soup. No further seasoning is necessary.
If that is not enough, the container makes
an excellent greenhouse for rooting cuttings—just punch holes in the bottom.

YES. Although [social media] allow us to fulfill the need to stay connected, the way we do
it is more shallow; the quality of our relationships is lacking in substance.

NO. I have Asperger’s Syndrome. I have a
great deal of difficulty talking to people. I
can’t look people in the eye, I have trouble
picking up on their body language, and my
own body language and facial expressions can
be misleading. Online I don’t have to worry
about these things. I have time to work on
what I want to say. And in some places, I can
delete it, if I realize that it was inappropriate.
Without these things, I would get very little
social interaction.
Fan club
I love Costco, and The Connection is a
great reinforcement of why. I opened the
[December] issue and immediately found
information useful for the marketing of my
healthy chocolate business.
And, it’s great to actually get an education
on the products rather than receive sales ads.
I don’t mind that the prices are not listed. The
Connection gives us the details, and we make
our purchasing decisions based on the value
we have found there.
Great read. Great store. Needless to say,
I’m looking forward to next month’s issue!

Stock response
Your correspondents apparently throw
away the best part of the rotisserie chicken
[“Bird is the word,” December 2012]. Even the
soup recipe is missing it.
The scraps make the best stock you ever
had, and it’s very easy too. I take all scraps,
bones, skin or whatever, rinse out the bottom
tray, cover with about one quart of water and
